US SAILING and The Hawaii Yacht Racing Association are sponsoring the US SAILING
Basic Race Management Seminar on January 16th at Kaneohe Yacht Club. The seminar
is designed for sailors who have some race committee experience; however,
newcomers are also welcome. It will be held in the club’s upper deck on Saturday
January 16 from 9:00-4:30pm.

The principal instructor for the seminar will be Guy Fleming, The US Sailing
Area H Race Officer. As always, he will be including the experience of the
group in his presentation.

Topics to be covered include:
1• Race Committee objectives, responsibilities and sailing instructions;
2• RC jobs, equipment, setting the course, starting system, starting penalties,
before the start, during the race, finishing and scoring.

At the seminar you’ll need your own copy of the Racing Rules of Sailing
2009-2012. If you’re a US SAILING member you should have already received a
copy. If you’re not a member you can either join US SAILING and get a free copy
or purchase one from the US SAILING Internet site (www.ussailing.org and
click-on “Store, Racing, All Racing Rules”). All will be given a copy of Join
the Race Committee Team at the seminar. To prepare for the seminar you are
encouraged to answer the “Study Questions” which are available on the Internet
site at http://raceadmin.ussailing.org/Assets/Race+Admin/Race+Officers/Documents

The Club Race Officer (“CRO”) certification test, which is given at the
conclusion of the seminar, is optional. However, in order to be certified as a
US SAILING CRO you’re required to attend a complete seminar and pass the test.
Moreover, in order to be certified as a CRO you’ll also need to have a copy of
the current US SAILING Race Management Handbook and meet the program’s other
criteria. Registration will take place on the day of the event. The seminar fee
($30 for US SAILING members and for non-members who don’t take the test; $60 for
non-members who take the test) includes handouts but does not materials. The fee
doesn’t include required seminar publications from US SAILING. Bring the
attached registration confirmation, along with your check payable to Hawaii
Yacht Racing Association on the morning of the event.

Aloha sailors,

I can’t believe we’re already in late August, and Lahaina is just around the corner. Next weekend we are scheduled to have the Lahaina feeder to Lanai, but it seems there is some lack of interest for this race, so it will most likely not take place. It would have been a great time, maybe we will try it again next year. It is a busy sailing season and everyone cherishes those lazy weekends that don’t involve sailing.

Last year for the Lahaina Return we had 39 boats in the race, and this year’s goal is to have at least 45 boats. Please let us know if you’re racing, so that we can get a head count.

I have also made a deal with Maui Zen Day Spa for those who are interested. Basically, if 5 or more of us book a massage for the same day, they will give 15% discount off their regular prices. Please see the attached flyer and when you book mention the Lahaina Return Special.

US SAILING's 2009 Chubb U.S. Junior Sailing Championship division winners proved themselves in a variety of challenging conditions this week as racing concluded today in a gusty, 15-knot northeasterly wind and large swell after two days of lighter breezes... California swept the national event, as Kevin Laube (San Diego, Calif.) won the Smythe Trophy for the singlehanded division; Kieran Chung (Newport Beach, Calif.) and crew Ryan Davidson (Costa Mesa, Calif.) won the Bemis Trophy for the doublehanded division; and brothers Scott and Evan Hoffmann (Escondido, Calif.) with crew Colleen Hackett (El Cajon, Calif.) won the Sears Cup for the triplehanded division.

2009 Chubb U.S. Junior Championships

We all arrived safely in Boston and made our way to the Pleon Yacht Club in Marblehead for registration on Sunday. After registration the sailors were given the needed gear to start rigging their boats. You could just feel the electricity in the air as each competitor applied their special touch to their boat while secretly checking out the competition. On Monday the sailors finished rigging their boats and attended a clinic for the balance of the morning. The afternoon consisted of practice races under clear skies and light air.

After a brief skippers meeting Tuesday morning , the sailors made their way to the racing area about 2 miles offshore and the 2009 Chubb Junior Championships were underway. The lasers, 420’s and Rhodes 19’s each had separate race areas. Winds were out to the North east averaging 8-10 knots and lighter in some cases. A total of 4 races were completed today with the last race shortened due to a fog bank that rolled in and cut the visibility to about 200 ft.
While the full standings after day 1 of racing are posted on US Sailing, here is how our Hawaii sailors are doing.

2009 FUJISANKEI BUSINESS i
WAIKIKI OFFSHORE SERIES

Honolulu, Hawaii - After a hard fought battle, John Spadaro’s Bashford 41 Boomerang won the 2009 Waikiki Offshore Series for a second year in a row. The regatta was sailed in seven races over three days off the south shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Boomerang finished with 14 points, followed by Gil Budar’s Farr 42 Gerontius in second, and Scott Bradley’s Beneteau 40.7 Cazan placing third.

In the offshore category, Cazan won the Medium distance race followed by Boomerang in second, and Gary Fanger’s 1D35 Tabasco in third place. Todd Wyrick’s Sydney 36 Fins won the six-race inshore component with 12 points followed by Boomerang in second and Gerontius in third.

Hawaii delivered her famous tropical trade wind surfing conditions to Diamond Head with 18 – 30 knots of wind, 5 foot wind waves, and a 3 foot south swell for the last three races. “I saw a 30 knot puff on one run,” said James McDowell skipper of the Corel 45 Heartbeat, fresh from his second place finish in the Santa Cruz 70 fleet in Transpac skippering Grand illusion.

Mr. Shigeru Namiki, the senior advisor to Japan Sailing Federation and the Series’ title sponsor, FujiSankei Business i, presented the hand-carved koa replica of the renown Hawaii sailing canoe Hokule’a to the Boomerang crew for their first place finish in the series.

Mr. Eiji Akaishi, the project manager from FujiSankei Business i delivered a moving speech describing his first time experience of sailing and his strong support for this race. FujiSankei Business i is excited about the opportunity the Waikiki Offshore Series offers to deepen the relationship between our two countries and promote sailing on both shores.

Format Change for The 2009 Waikiki Offshore Series

The original five-day eight-race format is changed to a three-day seven-race race series eliminating the Molokai Race. Based on requests for a shorter program race officials have changed the 2009 format. “We want to create a series that meets the needs of our competitors. A three day Seven-race series will allow our local boats to compete and gives our visiting yachts a challenging regatta and time to spend with their families and friends in Hawaii,” said regatta chair Steve Thomas.

Addendum # 1

1) The “Fuji Sankei Business 1 Waikiki Offshore Series” is a seven race series sailed off
the island of Oahu. The regatta consists the Molokai Race, a 40-mile medium distance
race and six (6) W/L of 9 to 12 nm (total for each race). Entries will be scored

Last week we showed you the new Jim Donovan designed GP 26, and here JD gives a little insight into the rule and the boat.

When I first approached the GP 26 class rules several years ago, my initial impression was, “Why would anyone want to build a boat so closely resembling a Melges 24? The strength of the Melges 24 class will surely limit the growth of GP 26 fleets”.

Since this first impression I have spent some more years sailing aboard a Melges 24 at home in Hawaii, generally in high winds. Much of this time I have thought how nice it would be to have a boat that can handle the breeze better, with a deeper keel fin, bigger rudder with more feel, rig further back in the boat to keep the bow from driving under the waves, and a couple winches to make it less painful to trim the jib and spinnaker. With my new GP 26 design I now have the platform for all of these improvements.

Closer examination of the GP 26 Class dimensions reveals a yacht with excellent potential. Although the GP 26 is approx 200 kg heavier than a Melges 24, all of this weight is carried in a deeper keel. The GP 26 has a similar displ/length ratio as the Melges 24, and the GP 26 rig is nearly 1.4 m (4.5 ft) taller than the Melges 24. Added to the package is a masthead Code Zero to boost the reaching and light air performance further.

You can easily derive that a GP 26 has plenty of power and will deliver very high performance. I am really quite excited to get this boat out on the water and let it loose. I think these small box rule yachts appeal to “individuals”; that is to say people who want to own a yacht that reflects more of what they want in hull form, rig and deck layout.

The GP 26 class reminds me of the IOR ¼ ton fleet that had many owner-built or owner-finished yachts. At the major regattas you would see quite a diversity of designs, and it was always interesting to examine the various designs and then line-up against them on the race course to see what happened. Showing up with a fast design was a major facet of the regatta that you just don’t get in a one-design fleet.

Thankfully the GP 26 bears little resemblance to an IOR yacht, and the box allows designers to explore a variety of hull forms within simple length, beam and displacement limits. My GP 26 design is currently under construction on the ground floor of Farrar Sails in New London, Connecticut. Kevin Farrar has built several racing sailboats over the years, and he decided it was time to upgrade from his 23 footer into a GP 26.

Honolulu, Hi. U.S.A. The Fuji Sankei Business i Waikiki Yacht Club announced today that the NOTICE OF RACE for the 2009 WAIKIKI OFFSHORE SERIES Yacht Race is available from their Web Site at http://www.waikikioffshores.com .

The 2009 WAIKIKI OFFSHORE SERIES will start with the challenging Molokai Race July 22, 2009. The classic 145-mile race from Waikiki to Maui and back will take the boats along the north shore of Molokai for a view of the worlds tallest ocean cliffs. The Series continues July 24 – 26 on the Waters off Waikiki and the island of Oahu and includes six buoy races and one medium distance race.

“We welcome all Transpac racers to Hawaii and invite them to stay and play with our local boats in some the best ocean trade wind sailing in the world.

2009 is the sixth year of the offshore ocean race sailed off Waikiki.

KYC Summer Circuit Coming Up incl. Feeder Race

It is that time of the year again, when we all need to get in the grove and
prepare for Summer Circuit. This is a Sailing event that you don't want to
miss! So all you town boats, get your boats ready for a race over to KYC on
May 30th for the 2009 POP Summer Circuit. This years sponsors include POP,
The Eye Glass Shoppe, Kaenon, North Sails, OMIA, Miller Light, and New
England Ropes, so there are promises for some great prizes and no one goes
home empty handed. Make sure you take part in this years Spin Packing
competition, which was a great time last year for both spectators and
participants. Town boats we expect to see on the start line for the race
over to KYC on May 30th include, Lightning, Saravon, La Mer, Isis, No
Brakes, High Tension, Whisper, and The Shark, just to name a few. If you
have never been part of this fun event before it is time you come join the
fun this year! Let's make it the biggest fleet ever sailing on June 7, 14,
and 28th in Kaneohe Bay! Hope to see all of you on the water.

A series of Waikiki Yacht Club sailing races has secured a title sponsor from Japan.
The official contract was signed yesterday at the Waikiki Yacht Club. The Fuji Sankei Business i, one business part of Japan's largest media conglomerate has agreed to sponsor the 2009 Waikiki offshore series. The well-known sailing regatta takes place in late July. The regatta has not had a sponsor for several years, so yacht clubs had to pay for the costs on their own.

FujiSankei Business i will be the title sponsor of the 2009 WAIKIKI OFFSHORE SERIES.

The 2009 FujiSankei Business i WAIKIKI OFFSHORE SERIES will be held July 22 to 26, on the waters between the islands of Oahu and Maui, Hawaii and will include the 145 mile Molokai Race, a 40 Mile medium distance race and six windward-leeward races. Perpetual and take home trophies will be presented for first overall, combined offshore races, combined inshore races and first in the Molokai race.

FujiSankei Business i is the largest business newspaper publisher in Japan with over two million readers. “We look forward a fun and exciting set of races to promote to our readers in Japan.” said Shun Eguchi, chairman of FujiSankei Business i on a recent trip to Hawaii to sign the sponsorship agreement.

The Molokai race record is in jeopardy this year with the Transpac 52’s and bigger boats in Transpac interested in the event. The three fastest times are Drumbeat at 14:52:31 in 1990. Windward Passage at 15:32:56 in 1982 and Braveheart at 15:14:57 in 20054.

Attached are the new and more friendly terms of the 2008 Boat Parade, which are designed to show a truly joint effort between both the Waikiki Yacht Club and the Hawaii Yacht Club.

Aloha Tower Marketing has been extremely generous, and based on a long business relation with Melissa Chang we have been able to offer each boat that enters and completes the parade route a compensation package of $200. We must guarantee a minimum of 25 boats. Aloha Tower Marketing will pay said amount to a max of 34 boats.

Additional prizes will be offered by Gordon Birch and Hooters.

Christmas Boat Parade - A NEW Concept for 2008

To all boat owners who wouldn't mind making some extra money, read on.

To renew the Christmas Boat Parade days of yore, when the line of decorated boats strung from one end of Waikiki to the other, a new incentive has been added: Money. Simply put, if 30 or more boats sign up and actually participate, each boat will get back its entry fee PLUS a minimum of $50! That should help take care of fuel expenses.

There's more. If your decorated boat is chosen for a prize, the dollar amount could be as much as $1,000. And creative ideas should be a snap this year - the theme is "Toys on Parade". Where is the money coming from, you ask? The answer: Aloha Tower Marketplace. The Boat Parade is a big draw for them, and to assure it takes place big time this year - that means at least 30 boats - they will pay $50 to each boat. They're also kicking in the prize money.

If, between our two yacht clubs we don't get the 30 boats, no money... and no cruise to the Aloha Tower. But why wouldn't we? No I-can't-afford-it excuse this time.

This is Notice of the 2008 HYRA Fall General Meeting to be held at Waikiki Yacht Club on November 18th at 1800 hrs. The meeting is for the purpose of receiving reports, reviewing the 2008 racing season and electing officers for 2009.

All sailors are welcome and voting will be done by delegate.

Unfortunately, HYC's general membership meeting is held at the same time at HYC including their election for the 2009 officers. Please note the following rules regarding delegate substitution: "Substitute Delegates for a particular meeting may be appointed by any Member-Club upon written notice signed by an elected officer thereof if filed prior to convening that meeting."

Ahoy everyone,

The Hawaii sailing season is slowly coming to an end and time for awards banquets is nearing. With the Fall Ko Olina Regatta closing last weekend, unfortunately with a lack of the all desired wind, the HYRA season’s point regatta is also coming to an end. On Nov 22, 2008 starting at 5:30pm the Hawaii Yacht Racing Association will hold the annual HYRA sailing banquet at the Hawaii Yacht Club. The awards banquet will start with cocktails at 5:30pm and will serve a seated dinner at 6:30pm. The Adult Menu will consist of Top Sirloin Steak and Garlic Shrimp, Oven Roasted Herb Red Potato and Steamed Broccoli in Garlic Butter ($22). The Youth Menu for our Junior Sailors will serve Spaghetti and Meatballs with Garlic Bread ($16). Both menus will have Cheese Cake for desert.

Please be advised that seating is extremely limited and will be sold on a first come first serve basis. Tickets will be on sale through the HYC office beginning Monday, Nov 3 and available for pickup after the 10th.

Also note that the HYC office has 50 parking passes for the yellow parking stalls in front of the yacht club (400 and 500 row). The parking passes will be available to HYC members and HYRA event guests on a first come first serve basis. Passes are available at the door the day of the event.

Aloha,

please see the NOR and Addendum 1 for the Fall Ko Olina Regatta, scheduled for Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25. This race will have a slightly different format than usual, as it will be a TWILIGHT race to
Ko Olina (first start at 1900 on Friday night). The race back to HYC will be on Saturday, and then your Sunday is free!

Also, please note that attendance at the skpper's meeting on Wednesday, October 22, 1800 hrs, is MANDATORY. Skippers, if you are unable to attend, please designate an authorized representative to attend on your behalf. Also, mooring fees for Ko Olina must be paid no later than the skipper's meeting.

Finally, skippers please reply to this email if you intend to race. Mooring space at Ko Olina is limited and we would like a boat count for planning purposes.

REVISED RACING RULES FOR 2009-2012
* The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012 (RRS) have been made available to
download online ahead of the worldwide date of implementation on 1 January
2009. The RRS are the definitive rules which govern sailing races around the
world. They are revised and published every four years by ISAF. The new
edition of the RRS includes marginal markings to indicate important changes
to the rules in Parts 1 - 7 and the Definitions. -- Full details

* Few people are more familiar with The Racing Rules of Sailing than US
rules expert Dick Rose. Dick has been a member of ISAF Racing Rules
Committee and the Racing Rules Committee Working Party for almost 20 years.
He is also the chairman of the ISAF Case Book Working Party, has been a
member of US SAILING's Racing Rules Committee for well over 20 years and was
rules advisor to the US Olympic Team from 1984-1992. Since the publication
of the 2005-2008 edition of The Racing Rules of Sailing, Dick has been a
central figure in the evolution of the 2009-2012 edition of the RRS.

Regarding the new edition of the RRS, Rose comments, "By far the most
significant changes for sailors will be the major revision in the rules that
govern boats at marks and obstructions (and some related definitions). These
rules are in Section C of the Part 2 rules. The old Section C rules,
particularly old rule 18, were by far the most complicated rules in The
Racing Rules of Sailing for 2005-2008. While competitors generally liked the
'game' they produced, many, including the last two ISAF Presidents, called
for simplification.

"In 2005 and 2006 the US SAILING Racing Rules Committee and the Royal
Yachting Association Racing Rules Committee developed several drafts of
possible revisions of Section C, and two preliminary US drafts were tested
on the water by various fleets during the summer of 2006.

"The new Section C rules (and related definitions) are the result of a
process that was described to and approved by the ISAF Racing Rules
Committee in November 2006. Using the US and RYA drafts and feedback from
competitors and race officials as initial input, a special working party
drafted the new Section C rules. Its members were Chris Atkins and Richard
Thompson, from the UK, and Ben Altman, Rob Overton and the author, from the
USA.

"There are other changes in the new edition of the rules, but they are not
as extensive as the changes that have been made in past revisions and for
the most part, when compared to the changes in the rules for marks and

Aloha:
Roy Disney and the Morning Light project is giving Hawaii an opportunity to preview the Morning Light film before general release. This is to be used as a fund raiser for Junior Sailors in Hawaii and the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
The movie will be screened at the Ward - Consolidated Theaters one night only. Tickets for this fundraiser will be approximately $50.00 to $60.00 and will include a pre race reception, intro to the movie by Roy Disney, and a follow up question & answer session after the show. Seating will be limited to either 235 or 400 seats depending upon the response.
The reception may include champagne and light pupus, but is a work in progress.

It was two days of wonderful sailing between Diamond Head and Koko Head for the 2008 Waikiki Offshore Series sailed August 2 & 3, 2008. The event is more a local race in even years and an international event in odd (Transpac) years. This year John Spadaro's Bashford 41 Boomerang won with four 1st and one 2nd in ORR and PHRF scoring of the five race no throwout regatta. The event was sailed in calm (By Hawaii standards) seas of 2 - 4 foot and winds of 8 - 20 kts.

Using a mid course start finish and five mile legs, PRO Joe Cochran and his team set a perfect course to take advantage of the winds, seas and the spectacular scenery.

Second in ORR and third in PHRF was the recent Kalakaua Cup winners, Todd and Cindy Wyrick on their Sydney 36 FINS. David Nottage and his Kaneohe Yacht Club team on his J44 Kaimiloa III finished 3rd in ORR and 2nd in PHRF.

The 1D35 Fleet racing was won by Gary Fanger on Tabasco with Dan Doyle's On the Edge 2nd and Mark Witty's Sensation in 3rd.

The Waikiki Offshore Series was started in 2004 to replace the Kenwood Cup International Offshore Series last raced in 2000. "This is the best racing in the world and combined with the aloha spirit makes this an event not be missed" said regatta chair Steve Thomas. The 2009 event will be scheduled after Transpac with time for all boats to make the Big Boat Series in San Francisco. An error was discovered by Howard Green in the distance of race two of the DJ Johnson 3- Day Around Oahu Regatta. As outlined below, the distance was short and the custom course was off. There will be a Racing Rules Seminar hosted by Joe Cochran, an
Internationally Qualified Judge, on June 21st from 9AM to Noon in the Upper
Deck at KYC.

We will be discussing scenarios regarding rounding the weather mark. Joe
will walk us through actual protests/appeals and the outcomes in
International regattas. He will take questions and be able to discuss
certain situations local sailors have encountered.

The seminar is free and members from all clubs are welcome; the seminar is
aimed at Intermediate and Advanced racers.
