Regatta
Summary
Thanksgiving weekend the first Hawaii High School IMU
Invitational Regatta was held at the University of Hawaii
sailing facility on Sand Island. Twelve teams from
nine high schools competed in the Regatta, sponsored by the
Hawaii Youth Sailing Association (HYSA). The four teams
from the mainland were: Orcas Island from Seattle WA;
Stevenson High from Pebble Beach CA, and two from Palos
Verdes High, Palos Verdes CA. Representing Honolulu
were: Iolani, Kamehameha, Mid Pacific, Pearl Harbor/Navy,
Punahou, and Sacred Hearts Academy. Seven teams
sailed in the Gold Division while 5 teams sailed in the
Silver Division.
With winds ranging from 10-20 knots and higher gusts, all
teams had their work cut out for them! The aging U.H.
FJ fleet had been given extra TLC with the help of U.H.
Sailor Fizz Foster, and they held up like champs with
minimal breakdowns. Twenty races were run during the
Saturday/Sunday regatta. All involved had a
challenging and fun weekend. The word from the
mainland is that this year’s visiting teams plan to return
next year with more sailors and bring new schools with
them!
